Barcelona to help restore Walled City
The DDA and the representatives of the Barcelona City Council of Spain on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) seeking cooperation in redevelopment of Shahjahanabad (Walled City and its extension). The MoU will also cover various aspects of urban planning, redevelopment of government and private properties, besides public squares.
As per the Master Plan for Development-2021, the DDA is supposed to prepare a plan for re-development of Shahjahanabad (Walled City), although it is the MCD which has the territorial jurisdiction over the area. Incidentally, the MCD too had floated a re-development plan for Shahjahanabad, which is, however, yet to take shape.
The MoU, signed between principal commissioner (CWG), DDA, Veena Ish, and councillor for the mayor’s office and institutional relations, Barcelona City Council, Mr Ignasi Cardelus I. Fontdevila, says that the two bodies will cooperate in the fields of urban planning, especially in areas of heritage conservation, public spaces and urban renewal of Old Delhi.
Speaking on the occasion, lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna said that the MoU was in continuation of previous visit by Barcelona City Council delegation during which the decision for cooperation was taken as the latter had done an excellent work during Olympics.
The main areas of cooperation are redevelopment of government-owned properties on priority basis, redevelopment to promote private owned properties and development of control regulations for Walled City areas.
