Basement water cause for alarm
The threat of dengue continues to loom large on the Common-wealth Games Village even as the MCD continues anti-larval spraying in and around the area. The real problem seems to be the waterlogged basements of the towers.
Chairman of the MCD health committee, V.K. Monga said that the water in the tower basements is a result of sub-soil seepage from the nearby flood plains. With the water level of Yamuna remaining high for days and flood waters reaching up to the bundh constructed to keep the river at bay, underground seepage has taken place to a large extent, he said. “We have installed pumps and are hoping to get some water out. But the seepage from the sub-soil is something that cannot be stopped,” said Mr Monga.
However, the improvement in weather conditions and the receding Yamuna level are positive developments. However, the threat of dengue will continue to loom large even as athletes and delegates have begun arriving at the Village
For its part, the MCD has deployed a fire brigade to spray anti-larval insecticide in the swampy areas around the Village. “Boats are also being used to spray the anti-larvae medicines in pockets where the water level is high. We are also spraying the basements,” said Mr Monga.
Meanwhile, the total number of dengue cases in the capital crossed the 3,000-mark and reached 3,013 with 97 fresh cases being reported on Monday.

Sept. 27: Not just straying on to the Games lane, beginning Monday, anybody obstructing emergency vehicles like fire brigades and ambulances in the dedicated lane would be prosecuted under penal sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, as the Delhi police has invoked Section 144 on the dedicated lanes for 12 hours.
The orders have been issued in two divisions of Connaught Place and north Delhi’s Kotwali area. Traffic movement has been blocked even for security vehicles on routes around the venues.
“On Monday, 34 challans were issued for violation. One vehicle was impounded,” a senior police official said.
