Biting cold claims first victim in Delhi
The biting winter chill, which has gripped the national capital, claimed its first victim as a young man was found dead under a bridge in west Delhi on Sunday morning.
The deceased, whose identity has not been confirmed, was found lying unconscious besides Metro pillar number 472 in Tilak Nagar by a pedestrian, who alerted the police control room. A team of cops arrived at the spot and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“It looks like a case of death due to cold. The deceased, who is in his thirties, was not wearing proper clothes and was covered in a thin cotton sheet when his body was found early on Sunday by a local. There were no injury marks on the body, which suggests that he may have died due to cold,” said deputy commissioner of police (west) V. Renganathan.
The local shopkeepers have told the police that the deceased was seen moving in the area since the last two days but his identity is yet to be ascertained.
“He was not carrying any document, which is making it difficult to identify him. He was very frail and it appears he could not bear the cold,” a senior police official said. The police has sent the body to hospital to ascertain the exact cause of his death before proceeding with the investigation. Meanwhile, a hue and cry notice has been issued about the deceased.
Delhi on Saturday witnessed one of the coldest days with the maximum temperature dropping five degrees below normal to touch 19 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature recorded on Sunday was 7º Celsius.
