BJP cries foul over hoardings’ removal
The BJP has accused the Delhi government of forcibly removing its hoardings highlighting the issue of power tariff, which has become a source of contention between the Delhi government and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission. The BJP had on Friday accused the chief minister of behaving as the chief executive officer of the private power distribution companies (discoms).
In a statement released here on Saturday, senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra alleged that the removal of hoardings was illegal and against the principles of democracy. “We had paid the agencies concerned for displaying the hoardings at 30 places. They cannot be removed forcibly. It is important to make people aware of their exploitation by the discoms who have been pressing for hiking the power tariff,” said Mr Malhotra.
In its hoardings, the BJP has pointed out that the discoms owed at least Rs 1,000 crores to the consumers by way of inflated bills and other reasons.
“The Opposition has an important role to play by taking up the issues concerning people. It seems the Delhi government does not believe in allowing healthy democracy to exist and has become intolerant to the extent that it wants to bully the Opposition, Mr Malhotra said.
The DERC and the Delhi government have locked horns on power tariff. While the DERC was planning to announce reduction in tariff on account of surplus with the discoms, the government had asked the DERC in May to keep the rates at the existing level.
