BJP demands petrol price hike rollback

Seeking the petrol price hike rollback, Delhi BJP will stage a demonstration at Parliament on Tuesday. Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta has charged that the petrol price hike is “an attack on the right to life of the people” as it has come at a time when people are reeling under steep price rise.
Mr Gupta said that since the UPA government decontrolled the prices of petrol and diesel, the prices have been increased seven times so far. “From midnight on January 15, the petroleum companies increased the price of petrol. What was the need to again increase the price of petrol by `2.53 per litre within a month. Soon the government is going to hike the prices of diesel, cooking gas and kerosene. Within a period of six months, the government has increased the price of petrol by `7 per litre,” Mr Gupta said.
The Delhi BJP chief further said that on the one hand price spiral has made the lives of the people difficult and on the other hand the government is “looting” the people by doing such things which are further fuelling price rise. “The government recovers more than 100 per cent tax on petrol and diesel. The price of petrol in international market is only `30 per litre but then why in India this petrol is being sold at the rate of about `60 per litre,” asked Mr Gupta.
He called the petrol price hike irresponsible and anti people, while alleging that the government is concerned only about the profit of the companies which are already earning profits. “When the government has formed a group of senior ministers under the chairmanship of Prime Minister to curb price spiral then what is the justification in increasing the price of petrol. The companies selling petrol and diesel are already earning profit because they are giving dividend to their share holders. In this situation, the claim of the government that the companies are making loss is wrong,” claimed the Delhi BJP chief.
