BJP to ease rules for traders: Goel

Wooing traders ahead of Assembly elections, Delhi BJP on Friday promised to create a more conducive environment for businessmen in the city by simplifying the procedure for filing VAT returns and withdrawing the municipal trade licence if it wins in the polls.

Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said that if voted to power the party would clear the path for commercial activities on the 351 roads earmarked for the purpose by the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 2007, as per the Master Plan.
“Traders under the Congress regime have to face a number of problems... They have to go through a cumbersome process for filing their VAT returns. Getting refunds is not easy either,” he said.
He said that if the BJP came to power, traders will have to fill up a simple trade information form to get permission for opening a shop.
“They won’t be required to fill any other form for the next five years, just file an affidavit,” he said.
Mr Goel said the BJP would amend the law for grant of trade licences. He also demanded a reduction in the fine for late filing of VAT information from `500 to `100.
He asserted that traders are like government servants as they collect VAT on its behalf, therefore they should get social security in their old age.
A high-powered committee would be formed to look into traders’ problems, he said. If voted to power, the BJP would provide relief to traders from the inspector raj system, Mr Goel said.
“In 2007 and 2009, MCD had declared that land along 351 roads could be used by traders and had also written to Delhi government asking it to grant permission for the same.”
Talking about the selection criteria for candidates for the upcoming polls, the Delhi BJP president said only those with a clean image would be given tickets.
Meanwhile, top civic officials, including the mayors of the three municipal corporations, have decided not to administer the oath of office to the aldermen appointed by the Delhi government, alleging the appointments were made “with political considerations in mind.”
“Mayors Sarita Choudhry (SDMC), Ram Narayan Dubey (EDMC), Azad Singh (NDMC), Leader of Houses, Subhash Arya, Mahindra Nagpal, B.B. Tyagi, chairman of standing committees in three Houses, Rajesh Gehlot, Ramkishen Singhal and Sanjay Surjan have decided not to administer the oath of office to the aldermen appointed by the Delhi government as it been made with political considerations in mind,” the municipal corporations said in a statement.
