BJP games: Sheila cornered praise for CWG

Delhi BJP on Monday criticised chief minister Sheila Dikshit for allegedly making attempts to draw political mileage out of the praise of the Commonwealth Games Village, criticised earlier for lack of sanitation. The BJP also alleged breach of protocol against the Organising Committee for not inviting city mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney for the inaugural ceremony on Sunday.

In a joint press conference on Monday, Delhi BJP chief, Vijender Gupta, Leader of the MCD House, Subhash Arya, and chairman of the standing committee, Yogender Chandolia, said that Ms Dikshit is indulging in “cheap” politics for taking credit for the situation turnaround at Games Village.
“When Delhi government failed in completing the work and was facing embarrassment due to poor sanitation, the MCD was called for completing the work. About 500 sanitary staff and officers took the responsibility of sanitation at the Village after which the Cabinet secretary also handed over sanitation work of 11 more venues to the MCD. About 2,500 staff and officers of the MCD worked in tandem due to which the work was completed eventually,” said Mr Gupta, claiming that the civic body brought about the improvement in the situation.
The leaders also alleged a breach of protocol at the Commonwealth Games inaugural ceremony on Sunday.
“The mayor was not honoured even at the time of arrival of Queen’s Baton. He was deprived of the honour that should have been given to him as the first citizen of Delhi. This is a betrayal of the people of Delhi by the chief minister,” alleged Mr Gupta.
The BJP leaders stated that more than 20,000 staff of the MCD worked hard to make the Games a success but the chief minister is not giving any credit to the civic body.
“The reason is that now the Congress has nothing to do with the common man. The MCD completed work connected with the Commonwealth Games worth about `1,500 crores,” claimed Mr Arya.
They also stated that the party would come up with a white paper on corruption in the organisation once Games are over.
