BJP stages protest against price rise
The Delhi Bhartiya Janata Party leaders came on bullock carts, cycles and rickshaws on Tuesday to stage protest against the petrol price hike at Jantar Mantar.
The Bhartiya Janata Party workers were stopped from marching to Parliament, with the police using water cannons against the activists who broke the barricade.
About 500 Delhi BJP workers led by city party chief Vijendra Gupta and leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly V.K. Malhotra gathered at Jantar Mantar.
About eight Delhi BJP MLAs also took part in the protest. The BJP leaders claimed that few of the party workers were injured in the scuffle with the police.
Addressing the party workers, Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta charged that “this government is playing a double game to demoralise the people”.
“On the one hand, a group of ministers is formed to curb the price rice and on the other hand, the government is trying to deprive the common man of his bread by increasing the price of petrol by `5.50 within a month. No where in the world the tax on oil is charged to the extent as it is in India. Here, the government recovers more tax than the price of oil,” alleged Mr Gupta.
He stated that if the UPA government abolishes only customs duty on oil and the Delhi government reduces VAT then the price of oil could be reduced in place of being increased.
Prof. Malhotra told the party workers that “he never saw such irresponsible and anti-people government before”.
“This government is taking such steps in the name of curbing price spiral which are fuelling the price rise day by day. This government is the government of bungling,” Prof. Malhotra charged.
The legislators, who courted arrest included Prof. Malhotra, Jagdish Mukhi, Ramesh Bidhuri, Shyam Lal Garg, Srikrishan Tyagi, Dharam Dev Solanki, Mohan Singh Bisht and S.C.L. Gupta.
