Bluelines back on roads ahead of govt decision
Even though the Delhi government is to take a view on the fate of the Blueline buses on Monday, a number of them hit the roads in the city on Saturday. The Blueline buses were barred from plying on the city roads during Games and were further directed to stay away till October 25 when the city government would have taken a decision.
A number of Blueline buses were seen plying on the city roads on Saturday though with much less occupancy apparently due to the Metro expanding its wings with the Central Secretariat-Gurgaon and Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar routes. The Blueline buses were also reported to be plying on Outer Delhi routes.
Last week, the city government had decided that it would take a view on the Blueline buses on October 25, though these buses were expected to have come back on the roads at the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games. The city government is looking at the possibility of moving ahead with the phaseout of Blueline buses which had already missed the Games deadlines, in the view of the DTC fleet of low-floor buses getting boost by addition of about 1,600 buses which were used for Games athletes and officials.
“Now that the DTC has a much bigger fleet and with the Metro reaching out far more areas in south, central and southwest Delhi, the Delhi government is placed much comfortable to push for the phaseout of the Blueline buses,” said a senior official.
DTC’s fleet of buses has gone up to 6,400 after the addition of the low-floor buses used during Games. As many as 200-250 low-floor AC buses are likely to join the DTC fleet soon.
