Body rots as cops fight over territory
In a shocking case of allegedly apathy by the Delhi and railway police personnel, the body of a 60-year-old man was left unattended for around 11 hours due to a jurisdiction dispute involving two police stations and the railway police.
The Delhi police. however. refuted the allegation stating that the body was taken to the mortuary when the information was received. “These are false allegations. We received a call at around 1 pm on Friday and the body was taken to the hospital,” DCP (railways) B.S. Gurjar said.
The locals of Jhilmil Colony, where the incident took place, alleged that body of the elderly man was taken to hospital in the afternoon by the local councillor after police officials fought over jurisdiction and did not action till afternoon.
Police sources said that the railway police had received a call on Thursday midnight about a man lying under a bridge near railway tracks in Jhilmil Colony. But, when the railway police visited the spot, they found the body lying on the road and not on the tracks and allegedly refused to take the body.
“After the railway police left the body for the local police, the cops of the Vivek Vihar and Mansarovar police stations too refused to take action claiming that it was the jurisdiction of the railway police. Even after several hours of fight over jurisdiction, the body was not removed by the cops of either police station,” a senior police official said.
“I came to know about the incident in the afternoon. It is shocking that the police fights for jurisdiction while an old man’s body lies unattended for eleven hours. It is shameful that we live in this city. At around 1 pm, I arranged for an ambulance and took the body to the mortuary at GTB Hospital,” said Jitender Singh Shunty, councillor from Jhilmil (ward number 238).
