Boy drowns, Yamuna still above danger mark
A 14-year-old boy is feared to have drowned in the Yamuna river after he went there to take a bath and didn’t return, the police said on Tuesday.
The police officials said the victim Akash, a student of a government school, had gone to the river to take bath along with his friend. The incident occurred at around 2 pm o
n Tuesday near Old Yamuna Bridge. The fire officials said they received a call from the victim’s parents who told them that Akash had gone to the river to take a bath but didn’t return home. Akash’s family lives in central Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar area.
Meanwhile, the water level in the Yamuna river on Tuesday was observed at 205.53 metres, which is still 70 cm above the danger mark. However, the officials of the flood control department stated that the discharge of water from Haryana’s Hathnikund barrage was around 80,000 cusecs every hour on Tuesday, but it would not have much impact in Delhi.
The officials added that the water level may go up further as 2.5 lakh cusec water released by Haryana into the Yamuna is expected to reach Delhi by Wednesday. The neighbouring state has released nearly one lakh cusec water on Tuesday.
Department’s chief engineer V.P.S. Tomar said the water level on Wednesday evening is expected to reach 205.82 metres.
