Bus parking bays may be scrapped

The bus parking bays that were to come up around various Commonwealth Games venues are nowhere to be seen on the ground. The task, entrusted to the PWD and NDMC, was to be completed by August 10 but not a single one of them seems nearing completion. For that matter, only some basic digging has taken place.

The Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit took a round of these spots and was livid with the civic agencies. However, no new deadline has been announced and the entire project runs the risk of being scrapped. Apart from waste of money and resources, this may lead to chaos around the venues when numerous teams arrive to compete during the events.
“New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has taken up two parking lots in inner circle for creation of parking bays. After levelling the road, the civic agency plans to create dedicated parking bays with markings for vehicles in each of the lots. While the remaining parking lots near the Games village and other sites under the NDMC will also be taken up in a phased manner,” said a Delhi government official who later blamed the civic agencies for the delay in the work. “These parking bays are to be completed by the civic agencies, in case of delays, the agencies are supposed to be blamed,” added the official.
Even in the busy Outer Circle of the Connaught Place where construction and renovation of subways are underway, a portion of the parking lot has been taken over to dump construction material.
“With subways out of bounds, thousands of pedestrians are having a tough time crossing the main road in Outer Circle. We form groups and then stop cars before crossing the road,” said Ramesh Gupta, who works in CP.
To compound matters, several traffic signals are not working. The traffic police confirmed that about five signals were switched off in Outer Circle as the movement of vehicles was faster without them. However, the Delhi government officials added that manual regulation is working out better hence, signals have been switched off at some places.
