Cabinet mulls sports academy
In a move intended at making use of the stadia and the sports facilities put in place for the Commonwealth Games and to popularise sports culture in the capital, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday discussed a proposal to set up a sports academy in the city.
The Delhi government on Monday also declared cash rewards for all the sportspersons from the city who won medals at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games. In another move, the Delhi government is learnt to be keen to provide world champion wrestler Sushil Kumar the designation of deputy director in the department of sports.
The Delhi Cabinet is learnt to have stressed on the need of having a Sports Academy in the capital on the lines of the Hindi Academy and Urdu Academy which were meant for the promotion of these languages. “It was discussed that through the plan, the Delhi stadiums, Thyagaraja (netball), Chhatrasal (track and field training), Talkatora (boxing) and Ludlow Castle (wrestling training), which were renovated ahead of the Games, will also be utilised,” stated a senior official.
The Delhi government has also decided to give cash awards to 10 medal winners, including seven wrestlers and three shooters.
“The gold medallists will receive `15 lakhs, while the silver and bronze medal winners will get `10 lakhs and `5 lakhs, respectively. The coaches of these sportspersons will also be awarded `5 lakhs each. The names of the coaches will be forwarded by the players,” the city government stated in a statement.
Meanwhile, the MCD said on Monday that it will soon reply to the queries raised by the CVC probing Commonwealth Games-related projects and attributed the delay in filing responses to the officials' preoccupation.
