Cabinet nod to MCD division
The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval in principle to a proposal to split the MCD into five parts just a year ahead of the cvic body going to the poll.
The Delhi Cabinet’s approval has come after the political committee consisting of three city ministers and headed by the health minister A.K. Walia wrapped up their
deliberations to go ahead with the Malhotra Committee report, which had recommended splitting the MCD into five parts. Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly V.K. Malhotra and senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi had quit the political committee alleging that the Delhi government was resorting to piecemeal approach as part of the political conspiracy.
The proposal accepted by the Delhi Cabinet on Thursday calls for five way division of the MCD with total municipal wards going from the current 272 to around 410. The political committee had submitted its report to the chief minister last week, thus rushing in to finish its job in a month’s time. The move is likely to put a question mark on next year’s MCD election as the Delhi government would now recommend the proposal to the Union home ministry, which administers the civic body. If approved, it would finally be brought in the Delhi Assembly.
Sources said the Delhi Cabinet has decided to go ahead for smaller municipal wards and decided that each ward should not have a population of more than 40,000. The municipal wards are now likely to go up to 410 if the proposal is accepted by the Central government. The Cabinet has reportedly given its nod to the proposal of having five mayors and five municipal commissioners once the MCD is restructured.
However, the BJP has criticised the decision of the Delhi Cabinet and has alleged that the move is has been taken to gain political mileage.
