Car driven by minor kills man, grandson
An elderly man and his grandson were run over by a speeding Honda City car in Alipur area of outer Delhi, the police said on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Bhagwan Das, 60, and his grandson Rajat, 5, both residents of Kamaspur in Haryana’s Sonepat district. The police said two o
ccupants of the car, identified as Ankur, 18, and a minor, who was apparently driving the vehicle, have been nabbed and a case of death due to negligence along with other relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against them.
Police sources said Das had attended the last rites of one of his relatives who passed away in Bhaktawarpur area and was heading towards his home on Saturday evening when a speeding Honda City car hit him on the GT Karnal road in Alipur area. They said the “out-of-control” car was bearing a Delhi police sticker and was plying on the wrong side of the road.
“Das and his grandson could not spot the vehicle and it ran over them before coming to a screeching halt few metres away from the spot,” a police official said.
Hearing the sound, a group of locals and pedestrians gathered at the site and the police control room was alerted. “Both had suffered critical injuries and they were taken to Maharishi Valmiki hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. Their post-mortem examination was conducted after which the bodies were handed over to their relatives,” a senior police official said.
In the meantime, the two accused abandoned their car and tried to escape.
The police said they were caught by a group of locals who handed them over to the cops and a case was registered against them at the Alipur police station.
Police sources also revealed that the two were coming after attending a party and were probably drunk but senior police officials refused to comment. DCP (outer) Chaya Sharma could not be reached for her comments despite repeated attempts.
“We have impounded the car which is owned by Satpal Singh, father of the minor boy who was driving the car and lives in Bakauli in outer Delhi,” the official said. Asked whether the accused were under the influence of liquor, the official refused to comment.
