Carols, cakes mark Xmas celebration
Delhiites celebrated Christmas with joy and enthusiasm amid elaborate security arrangements. City churches held midnight masses and people thronged to the streets to usher in the Christmas festivities, marking the day when Lord Jesus was born.
“Over two lakh people turned up at the St. Jesus and Mary Cathedral near Gol Dakhana since Friday night cutting across religious lines. People came with their children to see baby Christ in the crib,” spokesperson, Catholic Bishop Conference of India, Babu Joseph said.
“Christmas is no longer a festival of Christians only. People from all faiths celebrate it. Christmas Milan is becoming popular among households just like Diwali Milan which is a good sign for our society that upholds secular views,” Babu Joseph said.
President Pratibha Patil, vice-president Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the people on the occasion saying the festival provides an opportunity to spread joy and share happiness.
Christmas celebrations spread the message of love, peace and universal brotherhood. Prayers were offered to Jesus Christ. A mix of Hindu and Christian cultures marked the worshipping of Lord Jesus who was also offered cakes, sweets and fruits.
Devotees sang Christmas carols Silent Night, Holy Night and Oh! Come Let us Adore Him, exchanged gifts and wished each other.
Meanwhile, on the eve of Christmas, people thronged markets for last minute shopping of clothes, cakes, pastries and embellishments to light up the Christmas trees which adorned every household. All the Churches and missionary schools were decorated with colourful streamers and lights.
