CBI to file FIRs by coming week
The CBI is all set to register FIRs in connection with the alleged irregularities in awarding contracts related to installation of playing surface tracks for badminton, squash, lawn bowls and tennis for Commonwealth Games by next week. According to sources, the CBI is looking into the circumstances under which specific companies were awarded contracts. It is also planning to question the chiefs of sports federations in this regard. Some federation heads are member of the Organising Committee (OC) of the CWG, sources said, adding that the agency is also likely to make arrests immediately after registering FIRs.
The reports about some ineligible companies being awarded the contracts for playing tracks because of vested interests of certain federation heads is also being probed, sources said.
“The synthetic tracks for lawn bowls were installed at Yamuna Sports Complex, DPS R.K. Puram and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Initial probe has revealed that the contract was awarded at inflated rate,” sources said. The tracks were imported from London.
Besides, the CBI is also planning to send a three-member team to London to probe the alleged irregularities committed in awarding QBR contracts. The agency had recently sent a Letter Rogatory (LR) to London in this regard.
