Cellphone firm owners caught giving bribe

The CBI on Tuesday arrested two owners of a major domestic mobile handset manufacturing company for allegedly giving a bribe of `30 lakhs to two junior employees of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation for clearance of the construction of a banquet hall in the Wazirpur area here.
According to sources, along with the owners of the mobile manufacturing company, the agency sleuths also arrested two junior officials of the municipal corporation. After nabbing owners of the mobile company and the two MCD officials, the CBI sleuths carried out searches at 15 locations, including the residential and official premises of the municipal officials, sources added.
“The agency sleuths got a tip-off that the accused private persons had entered a deal with the engineers of the civic body to get clearance for construction of their banquet hall in the Wazirpur area in lieu of bribe of `50 lakhs,” sources said. The accused allegedly negotiated with the officials and brought down the bribe amount from `50 lakhs to `30 lakhs, they added. It was also agreed that the illegal gratification will be allegedly paid to two junior officials.
“Immediately after getting information that the alleged bribe amount will be paid at the Timarpur office of the owners of the mobile manufacturing company, the agency sleuths rushed to the spot. The CBI officials caught red-handed the duo while handing over `30 lakhs to the junior officials of the MCD,” sources said.
Investigations further revealed that the junior MCD officials had been sent there to collect the bribe amount on behalf of a superintendent engineer, an executive engineer and two junior engineers of the municipal corporation. Role of an engineer of the DDA is also under the scanner of the CBI in connection with the case.
The CBI officials recovered cash worth `40 lakhs from the residence of MCD junior engineer Kapil Dev during searches. Searches were going on till reports last came in and the agency is on the trail of other MCD officials.
