Chill brings cheer for excise dept
The chilling weather has at least been good for the excise department of the Delhi government, as the city recorded highest sales of liquor in the last month. A record sales of liquor worth `188 crores has been reported in the city in the month of December.
As per the monthly sales figure with the excise department, people in the capital consumed more than 13 lakh cases of liquor in December in contrast to sales of 11 lakh cases in December 2009. The excise department is not complaining as the sales figure last month stood at `188 crores against `165 crores in the same month in 2009.
“A total of 13,25,456 cases (a case contains 12 bottles) of liquor were sold in Delhi in December 2010 as against 11,24,103 in December 2009,” said an excise official, who added that rum was most sought after given its popularity in the winter season.
He said that 1,80,601 cases of rum were sold in Delhi last month.
