CIC tells MCD to decide criteria
The Central Information Commission (CIC) on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to “evolve a scientific criteria for declaring certain buildings dangerous”. The directions have been given in a letter dispatched to the MCD.
“The MCD does not have any ‘proper and scientific criteria’ to declare buildings dangerous for living,” stated the CIC letter to the MCD. The directions have been given in the backdrop of the recent Lalita Park tragedy where a multi-storey building collapse claimed at least 70 lives.
“This appears to be a serious lacuna. It is absolutely necessary that some criteria are evolved by which engineers can decide whether a building is dangerous or not. We cannot wait for buildings to collapse and keep sacrificing human lives without giving some thought to how the safety of human beings can be guaranteed,” information commissioner Shailesh Gandhi said. The case relates to an RTI application filed by Onkar Nath Kapoor, a resident of Pul Bangash.
