City continues to reel under powercuts
Even as the mercury in the city came down by nearly four degrees from Tuesday, the city residents continued to face powercuts. The discoms had to resort to load shedding largely on account of overdrawal from states and also due to the closure of the 220 KV unit of Badarpur Power Thermal Station for a Delhi Metro project.
According to Delhi Transco, the peak power demand in the city was 4,398 MW. While Delhi power stations only provided for about 993 MW, the rest was arranged from the Central grid and bilateral agreements. There were at least six instances of overdrawal from other states leading to under relay frequency operations. The residents, mostly in south Delhi areas like Malviya Nagar and surrounding areas, had to face powercuts from two to six hours. There were also frequent powercuts in other areas.
Meanwhile, according to the weatherman, the maximum and minimum temperatures on Wednesday were recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius (one degree above normal) and 30.5 degrees Celsius (four degrees above normal). The sky remained largely cloudy. Neighbouring Gurgaon, however, continued to sizzle at 45.8 degrees Celsius.
The weatherman has forecast mainly clear sky on Thursday and the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 41 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius. The heat wave conditions, meanwhile, continued to prevail in most parts of the northern region of the country.
