City decked up, J.N. Stadium to get Metro
The city is all spruced up for the biggest sporting event in the country since the 1982 Asian Games and is all set to host the 19th Commonwealth Games with a spectacular opening ceremony showcasing a display of music and dance by thousands of artists. Spectators, 6,700 athletes and officials from 71 countries and territories eagerly await the inaugural by Prince Charles and President Pratibha Patil at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the heart of the city on Sunday evening.
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue of the Games opening ceremony, will be linked to the Metro network on Sunday morning.
The first train on the 16-km corridor Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar will embark on its maiden journey at 8 am on Sunday. However, no formal function will be held.
Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) R K Kardam, inspected the line on Friday and Saturday morning and gave clearance.
A train will arrive every 2 minutes and 40 seconds to cater to the passenger rush, said Metro spokesperman Anuj Dayal.
The last train will be available at the J.N. Stadium Metro Station at 11.20 pm for Central Secretariat while the last train towards Sarita Vihar will depart at 11.10 pm.
