City spared, Jats put off blockade
The city facing the threat of Jat demonstrators blocking the borders to press for their inclusion in the OBC category got “relief” for a week with the community leaders deciding to heighten their agitation from March 28.
The meeting of senior Jat leaders took place in Amroha, UP, on Tuesday. Additional police force was deployed on NH-24 to deal with any eventuality. The deployment was removed only after the blockade programme was postponed to March 28.
The likely blockade of all border points will be a part of the bigger agitation across UP, Haryana and Punjab. There were also reports of a symbolic protest being held in Ghaziabad, close to the Delhi border. However, there was no disruption in normal traffic flow.
The Jat agitation, which has so far been confined to western UP and Haryana, has been threatening to inch towards the capital, with the leaders issuing threats of blocking fuel, milk and essential supplies to Delhi.
Last year, the protesters had cut off water supply to Sonia Vihar water treatment plant by taking control of the upper Ganga canal regulator at Muradnagar in Ghaziabad.
