CM issues warning to Games contractors
With the deadlines for the Games getting pushed since March, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had earmarked areas for ministers to oversee that the works were completed on time. Later, the PWD officials were told that the officers would be held responsible for delays in projects. And now, the contractors have been told that the buck, in all probability, would stop at their door step.
In a meeting held with the contractors on Monday, Ms Dikshit told the contractors had the “basic responsibility” to complete the projects on time. She asked them to bring to the notice of the government officials if they come across any obstacles.
Ms Dikshit added that they were under the lens of the Delhi government ministers, who have been regularly visiting their areas and observing the manner in which the work was being done. The contractors were reminded that all the major works should be completed by August 31 and September will only be on fine tuning things. If the projects are completed in time, the credibility of the particular contractor would go high, but if the deadlines are missed, he would face the music, the chief minister told the contractors in clear terms. For extra labourers, the contractors have been asked to approach the PWD officials.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, however, a contractor said: “We will do whatever is possible to complete the projects in time because national prestige is involved. But will we alone be responsible for delays? What if the work itself was awarded late?”
