Collapse victims’ belongings go missing
As if the trauma of loosing their near and dear ones and getting uprooted from their homes was not enough, the relatives of the victims in the Lalita Park building collapse incident now claim that their belongings are going amiss. They claim that they had managed to salvage a few things but were not allowed to keep them. The authorities said that locals and other unidentified people, who did not have anything to do with the incident, have managed to lay their hands on the belongings during the melee that ensued within the first few days of the incident.
Deepali, putting up in the Ramesh Park community hall near to the collapse site, claimed that she had kept utensils and a few other things in a sack. “These were objects I had managed to extricate when the debris clearing operation was on. But the authorities concerned stopped me and several others from taking things away. We were asked to keep it one side and reclaim them later. I went to reclaim my belongings there and could only find a few clothes,” she said. Minoti accused the administration of being insensitive.
“We have already lost so much. At least our belongings, which we had managed to salvage, should have been safely kept,” she said. One of her neighbours had barely managed to retrieve a cooking gas cylinder, while her other belongings were missing.
