Common man ‘helpless’, BJP calls for ‘chakka jam’
The common man in the capital is willing to buy any logic of the powers-that-be on the necessity of hiking the fuel price. Meanwhile, the BJP, which staged a demonstration against the hike, has also planned to carry out “chakka jam” in several areas. “The government will always have its reasons. Those who are rich can pay
even Rs 60 a litre for petrol. But how will I meet up the increase?” said Sumit Kumar, who traverses various areas in the capital as the sales executive of a small firm. An NGO worker, Rahas M, said that the media and the Opposition have failed to rein in the government from taking drastic steps. “It is not as if petrol and diesel prices are being hiked only now. The price of everything under the sun has increased manifold. And we are supposed to grin and bear it,” said Mr Rahas. Meanwhile, the state BJP is in a mood to up the tempo and try to cash in on the issue with plans of “chakka jam” and peaceful agitation. Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra termed the increase as “diabolical”. “The increase in CNG prices will not only affect transportation costs, but it will impact all items of daily use. A population that is crying out for relief from sky rocketing prices already will now have to contend with more inflation,” said Mr Kumar.
