Cong slams MCD for proposed property tax hike
Leader of the Opposition in the MCD, Jai Kishan Sharma, on Tuesday accused standing committee chairman Y.K. Chandolia of infringing on the rights of the standing committee by outrightly rejecting the proposed five per cent hike in property tax rates proposed by the municipal commissioner during his Budget speech without a discussion. However, he also supported reducing the number of meetings of the standing committee to save lakhs of rupees of the MCD.
Initiating the discussion on Budget at a special meeting of the MCD’s standing committee, Mr Sharma said the rejection of the proposal immediately after the commissioner finished his speech showed the immaturity and inexperience of the chairman. The act was also an infringement of rights of the other members. He also criticised the BJP, which is in majority, for presenting a deficit Budget.
He added that this was likely to continue in 2011-12 going by the budget estimates presented now.
Criticising various Budget proposals, Mr Sharma said that proposed property tax hike would add to the burden of the common man, many departments of the civic body that could have brought revenue were not functioning properly.
