Contractors to stir over non-payment

Angry over non-payment of their dues for the past 18 months, the MCD contractors have threatened to strike work in the city from Wednesday. For the time being, they have kept the Games 2010-related projects out of the strike but only “for the next five to six days in national interest”. They also asserted that they would not do any work

related to the preparations of August 15 celebrations around Red Fort. The contractors claimed that all the registered 3,000 contractors were in support of the strike.
Sunil Vohra, president of Delhi Municipal Contract-ors’ Association, said all the work related to picking up of construction debris and maintenance would be stopped. “We will not carry out any work of MPs, MLAs and the councillors. Also, we will not carry out works like filling up of potholes, minor repairs and cleaning, which become highly necessary during the rainy season,” Mr Vohra said, adding that any work related to the preparations at Red Fort for August 15 too will not be carried out.
“In national interest, the contractors engaged with Games asked us to wait for five or six days, and if we are still not given the payments, they too will join the strike,” said Mr Vohra. He added that contractors have last got payments for bills submitted in February 2009.
A senior MCD functionary said the contractors have sent a notice and the issue would be looked into. He added that it will have to seen as to how many people join the strike. The contractors have been highlighting the issue of non-payment for the last couple of months, but the cash-strapped corporation is yet to clear payments. The MCD is also under pressure to complete the projects and ensure that there is no construction debris left on the city roads after August 10.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
