Cop fires shots near embassy, held

A Meghalaya police personnel was arrested by Delhi police for opening fire outside the Uzbekistan embassy in the high-security Chanakyapuri area of the city on Wednesday evening.

Police sources said the accused, identified as Umesh, a constable of the reserved battalion of Meghalaya police deployed in the city, was watching a Cricket World Cup match in a compound with his colleagues.
“During the match, Umesh got involved in an argument with one of his colleagues over the fate of the match. He tried to physically assault his colleague who resisted and asked him to get out of the room as he was drunk,” the sources said.
“Umesh got offended. He caught hold of his gun, walked out of the embassy and fired three gunshots on the main road. Hearing the gunshots, one of the staff at the Uzbekistan embassy made a call to police control room following which cops arrived at the spot and took the accused to the police station,” a senior police official said.
The statement of his colleague was also recorded by the police.
“Umesh was not on duty when the incident happened. His medical examination has showed that he had consumed a lot of alcohol. He has been arrested and charged under Section 336 (endangering safety of people) of the IPC in a case registered at the Chanakyapuri police station,” additional commissioner of police (New Delhi), K.C. Dwivedi said.
