Cops arrest rape accused after protests
Protests broke out outside the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narayan Hospital on Sunday evening after a 24-year-old, suspected of raping a minor girl in Hauz Qazi, was allegedly let off by the police from the hospital.
Police sources said a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour Ramanand in Hauz Qazi area of central Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The incident was reported from Gali Kunde Wali, Ajmeri Gate.
The victim was playing with her friends outside her home when Ramanand, a native of Begusarai in Bihar, lured her on the pretext of offering sweets and took her to his house where he allegedly raped her.
The incident came to light when the victim’s father saw her coming out of Ramanand’s house with tears in her eyes. When he asked her what the matter was, the girl narrated the incident to him. Her father, a tailor, instantly rushed to the house and caught Ramanand. In the meantime, locals gathered at the spot and thrashed Ramanand severely. A PCR call was made and the accused was handed over to the cops.
The cops took the victim to the LNJP Hospital where her medical examination confirmed that she had been raped. Following this development, the accused, who was taken into custody by then, was also brought to the hospital where the cops allegedly let him off, sparking strong protest by the victim’s family members and locals of Hauz Qazi area at the hospital and at the police station.
Scores of people gathered outside the Hauz Qazi police station and demanded arrest of the accused. In the meantime, the senior police officials got to know about the incident and the accused was re-arrested. A case under Section 376 of IPC was registered at the police station.
