Cops bust gang of cheats, arrest four
The Delhi police claimed to have arrested four persons, including a Bangladeshi woman, from west Delhi for allegedly cheating people by luring them to exchange dollars with Indian currency at very cheap rates.
The accused have been identified as Johrul Haq and Rajjat, both from West Bengal, Razzak, a resident of Bihar and Firoza from Kalamerta district in Bangladesh.
“The gang used to target shopowners. One of them used to visit the shops to buy recharge coupons or SIM cards or medicines. The men used to target mobile shops, while Firoza used to contact chemists,” said deputy commissioner of police (west) Sharad Aggarwal.
The gang was busted on Friday when Rajesh Verma, a chemist in Nangloi, apprehended Haq and handed him over to the police.
Haq had allegedly told Verma that his aunt wanted to exchange dollars with Indian currency at cheap rates as she was in dire need of money.
“When Verma got suspicious and started checking the packet shown to him, all the three started running. He chased them and apprehended Haq with the help of the passersby,” Mr Aggarwal said.
The accused were allegedly involved in two more similar cases in which they duped victims of `3 lakhs, the police said.
The gang put dollars on both sides and newspaper cuttings in dollar shape in between the packets to dupe people. “The accused induced the shopkeepers by narrating false stories that their relatives were in dire need of money and wants to exchange dollars. Firoza used to develop friendship with chemists by frequently purchasing medicines and then lured them to buy dollars at cheap rates,” Mr Aggarwal said.
