Cops challan 484 on New Year’s Eve
The Delhi police conducted a special drive to check drunken driving on the New Year eve in the city. “We prosecuted 484 persons for various traffic offences last night. A majority of them (388) were booked for drunken driving while the remaining were prosecuted for other offences like violation of Supreme Court guidelines, tinted glasses and defective number plates,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg.
Owing to massive police deployment, Delhi roads remained incident-free on New Year’s eve.
The number of commuters found driving on the other side of law was double as compared to 2009. Mr Garg said those prosecuted for drunken driving were instructed to appear before courts to face the penalty of possible jail term apart from the suspension of their driving licences in addition to fines.
“We had made elaborate arrangements to ensure that New Year celebrations pass off without any untoward incident. About 500 traffic police motorcycles and 100-odd teams were deployed to check drunken driving,” Joint CP Garg said.
All of the 388 drivers appeared at various city courts on Saturday morning albeit to seek future dates for the hearing of their cases. “All those who were prosecuted last night appeared at a designated court either personally or with their counsels on Saturday, most of them have sought future dates for subsequent hearings,” said Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat.
