Cops lay down rules for safety of BPO women
In the wake of the recent Dhaula Kuan gangrape, the Delhi police has issued a list of guidelines which have been made mandatory for all the BPOs, corporate houses and media organisations in the city for ensuring the safety of the female staff. The violation of these guidelines will invite a jail term, which can extend up to six months.
The police has directed the establishments to maintain a database of all employees, security personnel, cab drivers and contractual workers. have been asked to hire the security personnel and other contractual staff from licensed agencies only.
The companies have been asked to ensure verification of antecedents of all employees including contractual ones and also to keep a check on the cab drivers so that they do not pick up strangers or stray from the route.
“It must be ensured that women employees are not made to travel alone with the cab driver at night and a duly verified security guard is invariably deployed in each cab carrying women staff,” an order issued by the police states.
The police will conduct surprise checks on the cabs to verify whether the guidelines are being followed properly.
“The violators will face jail of one month and `200 fine or both. On second and subsequent violations, the punishment will extend to six month and `1,000 fine,” Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
Officials said the routes for cabs should be chosen in such a way that a women employee is not the first one to be picked up or the last to be dropped.
“The cab should remain halted at the point where a women employee has been dropped till she confirms about her reaching her residence via a telephone call,” the order states.
Officials said a security guard should accompany the woman employee to her residence if the road to her house is not motorable and effective checks and control should be maintained on the movement of strangers around the cabs by drivers and security guards.
“The GPS system should be installed in the cabs used in the transportation of employees,” the official said. The orders enforced from December 8 shall remain in force for a period of 60 days.
