Cops lose trail of cab driver
The Delhi police has lost the trail of the 22-year-old taxi driver Rajkumar who is considered to be a key link in establishing the identity of the parents of the two-year-old baby girl who is battling for her life in the ICU of AIIMS Trauma Centre.
AIIMS officials said that the medical examination of the child has ruled out sexual abuse. A test was carried out by a gynaecologist on the baby on Friday. “The marks on her body seem like that of human bite. To verify this, we called in our forensic experts. They will analyse and let us know,” AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr M.C. Misra said.
Meanwhile two teams of south and southeast district police which went to Mumbai on Friday to nab Rajkumar failed to trace him, despite the assurances given by Rajkumar over phone that he was willing to join the investigations and wanted to surrender before the police. The teams had left for Mumbai after Rajkumar provided them his residential address.
“He has turned off his mobile phone and abandoned his house due to the allegations flying in the media against him. We had several conversations with him over the phone and had convinced him to come to Delhi and join the investigation,” a senior Delhi police official said.
“He is probably scared that investigators might accuse him for physically abusing the 14-year-old girl,” the official said. Asked whether Rajkumar had revealed anything about the identity of the parents of the baby girl, the officer said he did not reveal much. “His questioning is crucial in the case as he is the one who can lead us to the parents of the baby girl,” he said.
The two-year-old who was admitted to the hospital in a bruised and battered state on January 18, continues to be critical.
“She is stable but critical. She is off the ventilator since yesterday morning. There is no remarkable change in her condition,” said Dr Deepak Aggarwal, associate professor, department of neurosurgery, AIIMS.
The child was brought to AIIMS by a 15-year-old girl who claimed to be her mother and said that the child had sustained the injuries after falling from bed. She had said that a man (Rajkumar) brought the baby to her.
The baby had shown some signs of improvement on Friday and had also opened her eyes several times, which had raised hopes of the doctors.
Dr Mishra said, “She will need few more days to recover. There is no deterioration to her condition, hence we are hopeful that she will recover, if not completely.” A case has been registered against unknown persons under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 317 (abandoning a child below the age of 12 years) and 324 and 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
