Couple attempts suicide as families oppose affair

A 22-year-old youth and his girlfriend are lying in a critical state at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital after they consumed poisonous material in the Bhajanpura area on Thursday morning after their families refused to accept their marriage proposal.

The police officials said the victim, identified as Gulshan, who runs a mobile shop and lives in Gali No 13 in Bhajan Pura, is having a love affair with a 20-year-old girl of the same locality. The parents of both the victims were opposing their marriage and had even registered a complaint against Gulshan few months ago when he eloped with the girl and was later arrested by the police. Gulshan, however, secured bail from a court and the two were in touch with each other and wanted to get married.
On Thursday evening, the duo were found lying unconscious at the residence of Gulshan with froth coming out of their mouths. They were taken to GTB hospital where they are admitted in a critical state, police sources revealed. The sources said Gulshan had called the girl to his residence and the two had decided to end their lives after their families refused to marry them with each other.
“We are waiting for their recovery to record a statement. The family members of both the victims are being questioned. It seems that the two decided to end their lives after seeing no hope in the future for their marriage,” a senior police official said.
