Court notice to DCP (west) on inmates’ plea

A city court on Saturday issued a showcause notice to the deputy commissioner of police (west) seeking explanation as to why an assistant commissioner of police, who was earlier directed to look into the complaints made by two inmates of the Tihar Jail, was engaged in other work. The inmates had created sensation by claiming in court that Tihar officials wanted them to kill jailed tainted officials of the CWG OC and later alleged that they were beaten up in jail.
Issuing the notice, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Sunil Chaudhary asked the DCP (west) why the inquiry officer in the case not be changed. Earlier, the officer in question, ACP Raj Singh, had submitted that he was engaged in law and order arrangement duties and did not have sufficient time to inquire into the matter.
The court made the remarks after being told that the officer could not complete the probe due to his other official engagements.
The court also directed the director general (prisons) to file a report on February 1 regarding the alleged beatings of the two prisoners.
The petitioners, Amit and Nishant, had on January 27 alleged before the court that they were beaten up by other inmates for making the claims that the prison officials wanted them to kill jailed CWG OC officials.
The court is conducting its own probe into their allegations that they were given weapons by Tihar officials jail officials to kill two OC officials lodged in the jail.
