Court raps police over security to witnesses
A Delhi court has rapped the police for laxity in providing security to witnesses in a kidnapping case even after they allegedly received threats from one of the accused who had been discharged.
“I am not satisfied if not disappointed with their response. It is a stark example of lackadaisical approach of the police,” additional sessions judge Dharmesh Sharma stated. The court made these remarks after noting that the Delhi police failed to file a status report on complaints made to it by two witnesses alleging that they were threatened by the accused.
“It appears that they have not carried out any investigation in this regard to the threats advanced to the witnesses allegedly at the behest of the accused persons or Devender Kumar,” the court observed while directing the station house officers of police stations Khajuri Khas and Welcome to provide round-the-clock security to the witnesses Neeraj Goel and Alok Kumar in a kidnapping case till their statements were recorded before the court.
Meanwhile, additional sessions judge Sharma also asked the police to file a status report explaining the action taken on the complaint of the witnesses.
The court is recording statement of witnesses in the case registered with Kashmere Gate police station in which Nikunj, son of Rajiv Mittal, who ran a company, was kidnapped on July 27 last year.
