Daughter-in-law held for woman’s murder
The daughter-in-law of a 62-year-old woman, who was found dead in her house at Hauz Khas in south Delhi on August 7, has been arrested by the police in this connection. The 28-year-old accused had allegedly bludgeoned the victim to death with an iron musli, used for crushing spices in homes. She was apparently angry at
being constantly pressurised by her mother-in-law to pursue a course in Bachelor of Education, which she was not willing to. The police has recovered the weapon of offence and also blood-stained clothes worn by the accused at the time of the incident.
The police said the accused, Poonam, was arrested after several discrepancies in her initial statement emerged when the cops investigated the crime scene. She had initially maintained that two persons had barged into the house and hit her mother-in-law, Sarwan Devi, with iron rods to death.
Poonam, a passout from Kamla Nehru College in BA (Sanskrit), told the police that Sarwan Devi wanted to her take up B. Ed course so that she could get the job of a teacher as it would have improved the family’s precarious financial situation. Sarwan taunted Poonam saying her husband Kuldeep would have been better off had he married a working girl.
On the fateful night, Poonam hit Sarwan with the musli on her head following a heated exchange of words over the issue.

Aug. 9: A 35-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her house at Bhajanpura on Sunday night. She was apparently depressed over her parents not being able to find a suitable match for her because she was “manglik”, which as per Hindu rituals require the groom also to be a “manglik”. According to the police, the incident came to light this morning when the family members of Sunita, who lived in Bhajanpura, spotted her hanging from the ceiling fan this morning.
