DDA yet to hand over 3,000 flats

The Delhi Development Authority is trying its best to hand over nearly 3,000 flats at Vasant Kunj, which would provide almost 5,000 rooms to delegates and tourists during the Commonwealth Games-2010, to the Indian Tourist Development Corporation (ITDC) by August 31. Early this week, the group of ministers (GoM) on

Commonwealth Games had expressed concern over slow pace of the work on these flats. In a bid to bring the flats at par with international standards structurally, the layout of the flats had to be changed. The work on these flats had begun after certain hotel projects of the DDA, which were supposed to provide rooms for the tourists, failed to take off. A decision that these flats would be “re-developed” as rooms was taken last year. According to DDA officials, the major chunk of the changes in the lay-out has been carried out. However, streamlining other basic facilities may take some time. Nevertheless, the officials are hopeful that the project, entailing re-development of 2,709 flats at Pocket D-6 in Vasant Kunj, would be completed on time. The ministry of tourism, in its earlier reviews on the room situation, has also been stressing on the need to complete the project on time.
One of the problems DDA has been facing, of late, is reported lack of labour force as a large number of the work force from Bihar has apparently gone back to their native places on account of the harvesting season.
However, the DDA is said to be trying to make up for the loss by hiring labourers from other states.
For the ITDC, the problem is that any delay beyond the deadline will make it all the more difficult for it to furnish these flats with international standard features like handicrafts, paintings, art works. Besides, various other fittings and accessories will have to be installed before the flats are actually ready to welcome the guests.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
