Delhi BJP push for Games graft probe
A day after the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, Delhi BJP demanded the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to fulfil his promise of getting the guilty persons punished after a proper enquiry into the corruption in the Games.
Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta stated that the enquiry should be impartial, complete and high-level so that even the big fish may not escape. “The Games organising committee and Delhi government have now started talking that the players have done the nation proud by winning medals. But the BJP will not allow the cover-up of corruption to take place,” stated Mr Gupta, while congratulating the players who won medals in the Games.
He also stated that had the players been given opportunity for practice an year ago in the stadia, the number of medals won would have been much more.
“The Indian players practiced in the facilities at local level and showed the world that they are not behind anyone,” added Mr Gupta.
The city BJP chief also demanded that the enquiry into allegations of corruption should be held on day-to-day basis. He also criticised the organisers and the city government for causing undue inconvenience to the people due to their faulty approach and gross mismanagement.
“Prime Minister should himself monitor the enquiry on weekly basis. About 2.5 lakh poor people have been made homeless in the name of Games. The daily wage earners, vendors, JJ dwellers, labourers have suffered the most. Hostels of the colleges of Delhi University were vacated but the guests did not arrive and the students had to suffer,” charged Mr Gupta.
