Delhi can now host Olympics, says Sheila
After putting up things in place for the 19th Commonwealth Games just in time and getting praise for the grand opening ceremony from around the world, chief minister Sheila Dikshit now thinks that the capital city is ready to host the Olympics.
While talking to the media on Thursday, the chief minister said: “Delhi can now host bigger events, the national capital is ready to host even the greatest international event like Olympics”.
The chief minister further pointed that the national capital has now gained confidence from hosting Commonwealth Games after putting behind all the controversies surrounding the preparations for the event.
Meanwhile, talking about the cynicism associated with the build-up to the Commonwealth Games, Ms Dikshit pointed out that Delhi has already developed world-class stadia and other infrastructure and the city is now “confident” of hosting the Olympics.
“Yes, I think so. Yes, we can. We are confident (of hosting Olympics).” she said while talking to the media, when asked whether the city would be able to host the biggest sporting event.
Her assertion assumes significance as questions had been raised by some quarters whether India has the capacity and capability to host a mega sporting event like the Commonwealth Games in which 71 countries are participating.
A day before the opening ceremony of the Games, Ms Dikshit was quoted as saying, “The delay in meeting the deadlines of the Games projects was because of the civic agencies.”
She had then also added, “before we (the city government) took over the Games Village, most of the work was incomplete and now the Village is world-class which can be compared to any other Games Village.”
Before the opening ceremony Ms Dikshit had said that the Games in Delhi will be an affair to remember and had claimed that everything was well in place for the event.
