Delhi faces shortage of doctors
The Delhi government has not been able to fill the required posts of the doctors before the Commonwealth Games. Digvijay Yagya, a non-profit government body has claimed that while the Delhi Health Services has not been able to fill the required posts of the doctors nor the Central Health Services is efficient enough to cater to the
need. In an RTI reply, the health department says that in Delhi’s 31 hospitals, there is 1,228 post of general duty medical officer and only 917 post is filled till date and 311 doctors posts still lying vacant.
Apart from this, DY claims that out of 500 posts of non-teaching and teaching specialist doctors, only 250 posts are only filled till date.
According to the health & family welfare department of NCT, Delhi out of 1,174 post of general duty medical officers, 349 posts of teaching and 410 posts of non-teaching specialists are to be filled, but most of these posts are still lying vacant. The last time the recruitment of medical officers was conducted in 2008 under the Non-CHS cadre. Prior to the formation of DHS, there was no such health cadre under the Delhi government.
