Delhi float in parade after 3 yrs
Delhi’s tableau finally made it to the Republic Day parade after a gap of three years as it took part in the Republic Day parade on Wednesday. The tableau, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the city, had a sculpted replica of Lotus Temple in the centre and displayed religious and cultural heritage to highlight the religious and cultural
harmony in the city. Students of the schools run by the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) showcased their skills in classical dance, with a visibly happy chief minister Sheila Dikshit applauding their performance.
The Delhi tableau had failed to make the cut during the screening stage in the last three years. In fact, last year Delhi wanted to have its tableau on “Tryst with destiny” theme, which was rejected by the screening committee consisting of experts.
The alternative theme on the Commonwealth Games was also rejected by the panel last year. Delhi’s last tableaux on Republic Day parade was on “Stree Shakti”, which had showcased efforts being taken in the capital to empower the women.
This year Delhi’s tableau gave a rich cultural view of the city by showcasing themes of all four major religious communities living in harmony with the Bahai Lotus Temple taking the centre stage.
Complimenting the tableau, students from NDMC schools showcased a range of classical dances, including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Kathakali. This was to showcase Delhi as the place of convergence of all cultural streams.
Delhi lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna was also seen sitting with Union home minister P. Chidambaram watching the Republic Day parade on Rajpath.
