Delhi readies for Michelle shopping
Even though it is not clear if US President Barack Obama’s wife and First Lady Michelle Obama will visit some of the famous shopping complexes in the city or not, the shopping associations say they are prepared to play the host any time.
Among the places that are traditionally visited by the family members of the state heads is Dilli Haat, near INA, where Ms Hillary Clinton, who is now the secretary of state, had visited when she had come to India in 2009. “It is not that we prepare for long elaborate functions to welcome such guests. We are aware that they come here for shopping and, generally, they do not have much time to spend,” said a functionary of the Dilli Haat, when asked about any special preparations.
He added that so far there is no intimation from any authority whether anybody from the United States first family is going to visit. “As and when it will happen, we will be informed. While we are ready with our stuff, it is the police which has to take care of the security issue. Of course, they do ask us to remain alert and ensure that nothing untoward happens,” said the functionary.
Last time around, it was virtually a dash for Ms Clinton who was present at the Dilli Haat for hardly 20 minutes during which she had bought some bangles and a couple of other items.
Santushti Shopping Complex in Chanakyapuri is another plaza, which is traditionally popular among the visiting dignitaries. It has already played host to several top leaders or their spouses.
