The capital woke up to the coldest season of the day so far on Tuesday with the minimum plummeting by nearly five degrees since Monday to 3.7ºCelsius and the maximum temperature not going beyond 12.7ºCelsius, a drop of 2ºCelsius since Monday.
Fog in the morning hours added to the woes of the Delhiites even as rail and air services got affected. A 10-year-old girl also reportedly succumbed to extreme cold.
However, the local police said that the exact cause of death could be ascertained only after a post-mortem report.
According to the weatherman, the maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 8º below normal, while the minimum temperature was 3ºCelsius less than the average. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 14.7ºCelsius and 8.2ºCelsius.
“The temperature in the capital has gone below the 2ºCelsius mark in the last couple of years and in 2006 it had reached 0.2ºCelsius. The lowest minimum temperature (-0.6ºCelsius) was recorded on January 16, 1935,” said a weather department official.
The neighbouring areas of the capital also experienced the chill with Hindon (Ghaziabad) recording a maximum of 12.2ºCelsius and a minimum of 1.1ºCelsius.
In Indirapuram, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 11.9ºC and 5.7ºCelsius.
