Delhi youth held for acid attack on man in punjab

A Delhi resident was arrested here for allegedly throwing acid on a girl’s brother after her family did not instantly approve his marriage proposal, the police said on Monday.
The teenaged engineering diploma-holder resident of Delhi was nabbed on Saturday after he allegedly threw acid on the girl’s brother Surinder Pal Singh at the victim’s residence in Nathuwala West village here, the police said.
The accused visited the girl’s house and asked her parents to marry off their daughter to him, threatening that he would kill all the family members if they turned down his marriage proposal, the police said.
The girl’s father Balwinder Singh said that it was very difficult for them to marry their daughter without knowing about his family following which the accused took out an acid bottle from his pocket and threw it on Surinder.
The accused was over-powered by the police personnel on the Baghapurana Mudki Road while he was trying to flee.
A case has been registered against the youth by the police after recording the statements of both the girl and her father.

Liaquat files bail plea, says no evidence found
AGE CORRESPONDENT
NEW DELHI, MAY 13

Suspected Hizb militant Liaquat Shah on Monday moved a special NIA court here seeking bail in a case of alleged conspiracy to carry out terror attacks in Delhi, claiming that no concrete evidence had been found against him during probe.
During an in-chamber hearing, the 45-year old Shah moved the bail application before district judge I.S. Mehta who posted it for hearing on May 15, court sources said. Shah was produced before the court after expiry of his judicial custody which was extended till May 18.
Shah pleaded that he should be granted bail as he is in custody since March 20 and no concrete evidence has been found against him by the probe agencies as yet. He was sent to judicial custody on May 1 after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had said that he was not required for further custodial interrogation.
The court had on April 26 allowed the NIA’s plea and remanded Shah in NIA’s custody for five days after the agency had said that it needed to take Shah to Sonauli border near Gorakhpur in UP from where he was allegedly arrested.
