Delhiites will never forget this night
As Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara for a six, frenzied celebrations erupted in the national capital. Delirious scenes were witnessed across Delhi, as the cricket crazy crowd poured out onto the streets, to celebrate India’s historic World Cup victory. Waving tri colours, screaming “India,
India,” “Jai Ho,” and with vuvuzela blaring, it was a night-long party on the streets for Delhites. People poured out from their houses, bursting firecrackers, distributing sweets, as India lifted the World Cup for the second time after 28 years. Roads were choked with honking cars and motorcycles.
Delhi also had a special reason to cheer for the triumph as the capital’s Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli played a crucial knock steering the country to victory, when people had almost given up hope following the fall of Virendra Sehwag and Sachion Tendulkar.
Till the early hours into the morning, people danced on streets, sat on the top of their cars, screaming, “India, India” and “Bharat mata ki jai.” Crowd gathered at the Karol Bagh residence of Gambhir. Frenzied crowd also gathered at India Gate to celebrate the victory.
A massive contingent of police was deployed , barricades were put up to avoid traffic jams and any untoward incidents. However, the security arrangements did not dampen the spirit of celebration.
Reactions from the country’s top leaders poured in with President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulating team India and saying “it is a testimony to the hard work of the players and the astute leadership of M.S. Dhoni.” The Prime Minister said “the hard work and the effort of Dhoni and his men have been rewarded”. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said the victory of the Indian team “will be etched in gold for generations to come”.
