Demolish 35 schools, MCD told
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been directed to immediately demolish 35 school buildings which were declared dangerous two years ago.
Issuing a notice to the MCD commissioner, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) also asked the civic body to explain why there was a delay in demolition of these school buildings.
“The commission has viewed it as a serious matter and has asked for immediate action by the concerned authorities of the engineering department of the MCD,” a DCPCR spokesperson said.
The commission has viewed it as a violation of Section 9 of the RTE Act which earmarks the responsibility of the concerned organisation to provide infrastructure including building, teaching staff and learning material, besides taking it as an apparent threat to lives of children studying in each of these schools.
“The commission has received information that some of these buildings had been declared dangerous two years back, yet the engineering department of MCD has not responded to several requests from education department,” the spokesperson said.
The commission has also asked the MCD to submit a list of dangerous schools buildings along with a detailed report. —PTI
