Dinesh Singh is new DU V-C
Prof. Dinesh Singh, the pro vice-chancellor of Delhi University, was on Friday appointed the new vice-chancellor. He took over charge from Prof. Deepak Pental, whose term expired on August 31.
Prof. Singh is credited for the turnaround of the South Campus as a vibrant centre for academics in his capacity as the campus director. A St. Stephen’s College alumni, Prof. Singh holds a doctorate from the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London. He is an adjunct professor in mathematics at University of Houston, Texas and has also taught at IIT (Delhi). Prof. Singh, who also indulges in painting, has authored many books.
Talking to this newspaper immediately after his appointment, Prof. Singh said: “I extend a hand of friendship and cooperation to all segments and hope that they reciprocate.” He said that he saw no reasons for any problem in conducting examinations under the semester system.
Meanwhile, the Duta called off its strike on Friday after the Delhi high court asked it not to jeopardise students’ future.
Welcoming the appointment of Prof. Singh as the V-C, Duta president Aditya Narayan Mishra said that he hoped it would spell an end to the era of “corruption and arrogance” in DU.
