Doubts if YSC will meet deadline: Walia
The jury is still out on whether the DDA’s Yamuna Sports Complex (YSC), where archery and table tennis competitions are to be held during the Commonwealth Games 2010, will be completed in time. While official related to the DDA maintained that the work would be completed by the August 31 deadline, Delhi finance minister A.K. Walia expressed serious doubts over the same on Wednesday.
Following a visit to the YSC, Dr Walia told reporters that there was a lot of work pending and much efforts needed to put in to complete the task. “The way the work is going on, I have doubts over timely completion of some of the projects,” said Dr Walia.
The work at the YSC had been affected when rains lashed the city on July 12. There was some leakage in the underconstruction roof, which in turn damaged the false ceilings of the stadium. The wooden flooring was also affected to some extent. The DDA had then maintained that the damage was minimal and only the false ceilings, made of gypsum, were damaged as they become loose and soggy once it comes in contact with water.
Even so, the DDA seems to have taken its own time in floating tenders for installation of furniture, internal fittings and house keeping for the table tennis stadium. While the date of opening of tenders for furniture is August 10, that for house keeping will opened on August 6. The firm bagging the tender to be opened on August 10 will have to finish the work within 20 days and would be liable for payment of Rs 10,000 per day as fine if the work is not satisfactory.
Town planners, however, expressed concern saying that merely putting material items in place was not enough. “They have to be streamlined and things have to be checked before any competition is allowed,” said a town planner on condition of anonymity.
